Twitch, OBS, Discord, and live stream mono fold: when viewers on phone or BT hear a hollow mix
Your OBS bus, Twitch VOD, Discord stage, or restream sounds huge in headphones. Viewers on phone speakers and Bluetooth hear thin VO, missing game bass, or a bed that combs under chat alerts. That is usually duplicated paths (desktop + app + mic loopbacks), hard L/R layouts, or stereo beds that fold badly, not a missing widener. Clean paths and mono-check first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo material you must keep stereo.
Download PHIXER free PHIXER hub
PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not an OBS plugin, not a stream encoder, and not a substitute for mono audition of the stream bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.
What livestream mono failure sounds like
- Mic + desktop capture both include the same game / Discord. Identical content a few milliseconds apart hollows bass on phone fold.
- Hard L/R guest or music layout collapses. Stereo interview or music under VO that phones sum to mono.
- Alert / stinger stereo FX kill intelligibility. Wide one-shots under speech on fold.
- Fine in cans, broken on phone / BT / TV speaker. Same destinations as car / BT / phone, social mono, and live FOH / stream.
- VOD or clip upload sounds thinner than the live monitor. Encoder path differs from your headphones.
Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Route the OBS / stream monitor bus to a utility and flip to mono (or fold L+R in your DAW / Voicemeeter / Cable).
- Mute desktop capture, then unmute. Mute Discord, then unmute. Note what disappears: VO chest, game bass, music body.
- Solo mic vs game vs Discord vs music. Find which pair collapses when both open.
- Check correlation on the stream master if you can (correlation meters). Then listen on a phone speaker.
Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)
1. One hero path per source
Do not leave desktop audio and a separate game/Discord capture both open if they share the same content. Pick the cleaner path. Mute the duplicate. Stacked identical content is the fastest hollow on fold.
2. Prefer centered speech
Hard left host / hard right guest or music sounds wide in cans and collapses on phone. Keep VO centered. Mild width only if you must. Social destinations fold: YouTube / social.
3. Polarity if a path flips
Some interfaces, virtual cables, and loopbacks invert. Flip mic or a secondary capture when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
4. Simplify stereo beds and alerts under VO
Stereo music beds, verb returns, and wide alert stingers under speech often kill mono intelligibility. Narrow Side, prefer mono beds under critical talk. Reverb returns · delay throws.
5. Match live FOH / matrix habits if you also stream a room
FOH + stream matrixes can fight. Related: live FOH / foldback / stream.
6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo game bed or music print must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B on the stream bus.
Path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop + game + Discord duplicate | Bass / VO cancel on same content | Mute duplicates; one hero path |
| Hard L/R guests or music | Hollow when phones fold | Center speech; less width |
| Stereo alert / stinger under VO | Intelligibility drop on phone | Mono or narrow alerts |
| Stereo music under talk | Presence loss on fold | Narrow / mono bed; HPF |
| OBS monitor vs encoder | Fine in cans, thin on VOD | Mono-check the program / stream bus |
| Phone / BT / TV speaker | Viewer reports thin mix | Car / phone · Social |
Livestream checklist (before go-live)
1. Label every audio source in OBS
Name mic, desktop, Discord, game, music, and alerts. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.
2. Mono-check the program / stream bus
Not just your headphones. Fold the bus that actually goes to Twitch / YouTube / Discord.
3. Test phone speaker and a Bluetooth earbud
Most viewers are mono-ish. Guides: car / BT / phone, social mono, master bus mono.
4. Optional null / mono workflow if you mix in a DAW
DAW null-test + mono-check before you go live or upload a VOD.
When PHIXER belongs on livestream stereo
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (game bed, music bed, stereo FX return), not a mono mic you fake-widened.
- Duplicates, polarity, and centered speech are cleaned up, but fold still hollows a band of the spectrum.
- You can A/B mono with the plugin bypassed and hear clearer body without wrecking the image.
- You are not using it to "fix" overlapping desktop + Discord captures of the same words, or to replace muting a duplicate path.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same content twice (desktop + app) hollows | Mute duplicate | Identical content sum |
| Hard L/R layout collapses on phone | Center speech; less width | Fold sum |
| Only stereo bed under VO collapses | Narrow / mono bed | Decorrelated wet |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono mic alone is dull | Tone / EQ / gain / noise | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-auditioned the stream program bus yet.
- The fix is obviously mute duplicate, center the speech, or less bed width.
- You want PHIXER to make a stream louder, wider, or "more present." Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance, noise, or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Mono-fold the OBS/stream bus → mute duplicate captures → center VO → polarity if needed → simplify stereo beds and alerts → phone/BT check → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a bed → go live or upload VOD.
